Hong Kong Mourns First Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa

Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong’s inaugural chief executive who guided the city during its 1997 handover to Chinese rule, has died at age 89. His office confirmed he passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, surrounded by family. Tung also served as a vice-chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, drawing widespread tributes from leaders across the region.
