DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Lowell was located near latitude 13.1 North, longitude 148.5 West. Lowell is moving toward the west near 10 mph (17 km/h). A west to west-northwest motion is expected to continue during the next several days. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid intensification is forecast over the next couple of days, and Lowell is forecast to become a major hurricane by Wednesday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 993 mb (29.33 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of the Hawaiian Islands beginning later this week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
