Odisha has recorded 1,154.3 mm of rain this monsoon as of August 31, completing its normal seasonal rainfall quota nearly a month ahead of schedule. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall activity across the state in September. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said northern Odisha is likely to receive normal or above-normal rainfall during the month. He also said the impact of low-pressure systems is likely to continue over Odisha in September, bringing further spells of rainfall to different parts of the state. “Today, we have predicted how much rain India will receive in September. As per the prediction, the country will receive less than normal rainfall this month. If Odisha is considered, north part of the state is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. On the other hand, southern Odisha is expected to receive less than normal rainfall. Odisha, so far, has experienced 25 per cent excess rainfall this season,” Mohapatra said.  Odisha has witnessed several episodes of heavy rainfall during the current monsoon season, with intense downpours triggering flooding and waterlogging in several districts. Rising water levels in major rivers have also affected low-lying and flood-prone areas.
