Interests in the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the progress of Lowell. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was located near latitude 13.4 North, longitude 159.6 West. Lowell is moving toward the west near 9 mph (15 km/h). This general motion with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected during the next day or two, followed by a turn toward the northwest and north this weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Lowell is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next few days. However, Lowell is expected to remain a major hurricane through the weekend. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 947 mb (27.97 inches).
