DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was located near latitude 13.3 North, longitude 156.3 West. Lowell is moving toward the west near 10 mph (17 km/h). This general motion with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Lowell is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next few days. However, Lowell is expected to remain a major hurricane for the next several days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 941 mb (27.79 inches).
