A broad trough of low pressure brought showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea yesterday. Locally, it was mainly cloudy with occasional showers and squally thunderstorms. Showers were heavy at times during the day. About 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 50 millimetres over parts of the New Territories West and Kowloon. Besides, the remnant of Saudel intensified into a tropical depression again over the southeastern coastal waters of Hainan Island yesterday. Saudel is expected to move eastwards across the northern part of the South China Sea, edging closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong gradually today and tomorrow. Under its combined effect with the northeast monsoon, the weather will be windier with squally showers and swells over the coast of southern China today and tomorrow. On the other hand, the area of low pressure over the western North Pacific to the east of the Philippines intensified gradually yesterday. It is expected to move towards the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands in the next couple of days. Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Tuesday, 1 Sep 2026): Mainly cloudy with occasional squally showers and thunderstorms. Showers will be heavier in some areas. Temperatures will range between 26 and 30 degrees. Moderate northerly winds, becoming fresh, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. There will be swells. Outlook: Windier with a few squally showers and swells on Wednesday. Still a few showers in the following couple of days.
