Festival Update: Krishna Janmashtami Celebrations Bring Mathura, Vrindavan and Delhi Alive

Krishna Janmashtami celebrations have begun across India, with devotees gathering at temples and religious centres to mark the birth of Lord Krishna with prayers, aartis, devotional songs and elaborate decorations. From Mathura, believed to be the birthplace of Krishna, to Vrindavan, Delhi, Noida and Mumbai, festive preparations and religious programmes are drawing large crowds of devotees. The Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple in Mathura has been illuminated with colourful lights, while temples across Vrindavan have taken on a vibrant festive appearance ahead of the midnight celebration marking Krishna’s appearance. Devotees have been arriving since early morning, with long queues seen outside several temples as people wait for darshan and participate in special prayers. Many devotees are observing fasts that will continue until the traditional midnight celebration. Maharashtra is witnessing the colourful spectacle of Dahi Handi, with Govinda groups taking part in celebrations and attempting to break decorated earthen pots amid chants and music. In Delhi, technology is also becoming part of the festivities, with an AI-enabled Krishna-themed presentation attracting attention. Noida’s ISKCON temple is resonating with devotional bhajans as devotees gather to celebrate the occasion. The atmosphere across the country reflects a blend of faith, tradition, music, devotion and modern presentation, with Mathura and Vrindavan remaining among the key centres of the celebrations. As devotees eagerly await the midnight moment, temples continue to welcome visitors and special Krishna Janmotsav programmes are being organised at several locations.
