CHATRA RAIN CRISIS: Children Risk Lives Crossing Swollen River to Reach School

Heavy monsoon rains have created a serious education and safety crisis in Chatra, Jharkhand, where children are being forced to cross swollen rivers to reach school. In Kunda block, around 629 students across 13 schools are affected. Many children cross strong currents while holding each other’s hands, carrying schoolbags on their shoulders and shoes and clothes in their hands. In some cases, parents carry children across the river to ensure they do not miss school. The lack of a safe bridge or proper road is affecting not only students but also patients, pregnant women, and elderly residents who need to cross the river during the rainy season. Parents and villagers have urged authorities to construct a road and bridge urgently, saying children are losing valuable study time because of fear, delays, and unsafe crossings. Rain has also disrupted school operations, making it difficult to deliver midday-meal supplies and essential materials. Meanwhile, Paras village in Hunterganj block becomes virtually isolated during heavy rainfall, with around 40 families and nearly 300 residents surrounded by water. The situation has raised serious questions about infrastructure, public safety, and the government’s responsibility to ensure children can access education safely.
