The controversy erupted following revelations that the public broadcaster issued internal editorial directives discouraging journalists from using the word 'terrorist' when covering extremist attacks.

Basnicki called the language policy appalling and morally misguided, asserting that sanitizing terminology diminishes the brutal reality endured by victims and their grieving families.
