Over one thousand citizen scientists across the globe recently participated in a unique ecological experiment by burying pairs of pure organic cotton underpants in gardens, pastures, and croplands.

Researchers retrieved the fabric months later to assess microbial decomposition, using the degraded cotton as a practical benchmark to measure underground biological activity.

The results demonstrated that human land use is the single largest factor controlling decay rates, underscoring how agricultural management fundamentally shapes soil ecosystem health.
