Former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić, widely reviled as the "Butcher of Bosnia" for orchestrating horrific wartime atrocities, has died at the age of 84.

Mladić commanded Serb forces throughout the 1992–1995 Bosnian War, overseeing the brutal siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys were systematically slaughtered.

Captured in 2011 after sixteen years on the run, Mladić spent his final years serving a life sentence following his conviction by a United Nations tribunal for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
