Commuters dodging fares across Ontario's regional transit network are about to face much steeper financial consequences. Beginning September 8, provincial transit operator Metrolinx will increase the fine for a first-time fare evasion offence to $200.

The policy shift aims to curb revenue losses and boost payment compliance across GO Transit and UP Express services. Subsequent violations will carry even heavier penalties.

Transit officials confirmed that fare inspections will intensify along key corridors to ensure fairness for paying passengers.
